Funny, I know some people that went to Copenhagen for the weekend recently too. They definitely didn't focus on the ecological aspect though, more on the sightseeing...
I definitely like how much more people in Europe bike than in the U.S. I think it has something to do with being older -- the streets have room for people to bike because that was what was available when the streets were built. Kind of like public transportation. The trams were set up in Berlin in the 1800s, thereby paving the way for the rest of the great transportation system. It's not like it's something that can happen overnight, sadly.
