And The Winner Is ...

By popular consensus, Mr. Green Bean for his acronym:

APLS ("Apples") - Affluent Persons Living Sustainably

Congrats, Mr. GB! Contact me via comments or email with your non-profit/charity of choice!

Thanks to everyone for all the great suggestions. Needless to say everyone came up with better acronyms than YAWN.

Now let's get to work popularizing APLS! If we don't want to be stuck with YAWN we've got to go wide with APLS. So do all you can to make APLS stick. I suck at graphic design, but I would love to see a little sidebar button with the "APLS" designation if anyone wants to take that on....

By the way, for those of you who aren't so sure about whether you qualify as "affluent," I direct you to this site. You're probably richer than you think!

That site you directed us to is a real eye opener. Thanks for including it. And I think APLS really hits it just right.

Right on. I entered my income as $8000, which is actually more than I made last year, but probably less than I'll make this year. If I don't count the fact that I have savings, I figured just that income, very low in the context of typical USA incomes, would not show me as wealthy. Wrong! It put me in the top 14% of people globally. Thanks for sharing that site!

OK, this has nothing to do with the acronyms, but I see you're looking for help locating cheese. I just found a pretty cool resource for finding local cheese at:

http://www.forkandbottle.com/cheese/uscheese.htm

Should help you find local artisans in your area.

Darn! And I was going to offer an alternative meaning for CRAPPERS: Carbon Reducing Austere Persons Prefer Eating Rodents.

The site's interesting. I kept entering different numbers. It freaks out if you add commas. It also gives up on the calculations if you go too high. $2 million puts you in the top .01% but the ranking stays exactly the same for $10 million. I guess it assumes nobody that rich will be coming to their site.

Chile: I thought you advocated for a vegan diet? What's with all this bug/rodent eating advocacy?

Sam said...

Burbanmom's comment reminds me...why don't you make your own cheese? I mean you did make butter and crackers. Cheese seems a lot easier to make especially if you have access to raw milk.

I do, Beany, but if you read the post on my blog, I present this alternative for people who won't give up their animal protein. Think about it - it's less work than raising chickens, pigs, or cows. It's sustainable - their breeding rates are very high. It serves two purposes - getting rid of pests while obtaining animal protein. I offer it as an option to a vegan diet. :)

Chile: I usually read blogs when I'm eating and when I saw that bug post with pictures (!!), I was a bit grossed out and didn't read further.

Joyce & Sue, yeah I thought it was eye-opening as well. Most of us ARE really rich, and I think it's good for us to occasionally be reminded of that.

Burbanmom, thanks!!

Chile, okay, but are rodents high in omega-3s? Inquiring minds want to know. (And I think the reason that the site gives you the same calculation at 2 mil and 10 mil is because their calculator only goes to two decimal points.)

Beany, re: cheese, stay tuned.

Chile said...

Beany, you'll just have to go back when you're not eating. ;-)

Arduous, I'm sorry to say, no. Well, this data is for squirrels since the site doesn't list rats but squirrels are in the order Rodentia. Unfortunately, they are high in cholesterol.

Flax seed is high in Omegas and low in cholesterol. It also works wonderfully as an egg substitute in baking. *cheeky vegan grin*

ruchi said...

Chile- Jayzus! Do those squirrels live on Marie Callendars' frozen meals? Do the squirrels all suffer from diabetes and hypertension? Because those are some really high levels of cholesterol, sodium and omega-6.

ruchi said...

Oh and DUDE. You weren't kidding when you said flax seed was high in omega-3. I think I'm going to start baking flax seed brownies and eating one a day!

Chile said...

It's that salted nut diet, ya know. ;-)

Flax are the vegan's answer to "you have to eat salmon for the fat" argument. Walnuts are another good source, but unfortunately they give me heartburn.

Hey, can you send me some brownies too? (Oh, and I'll go away now so you don't start calling me a comment whore.)

I am going to have to join the rodent talk :)

A few years ago, when we traveled to South America, we saw so many homes raising guinea pigs in Peru and Ecuador. I know, I know. They are very cute rodents. But cuy (called in those countries) is a delicacy, consumed at festivals and with guests. Apparently it only takes 40 days from birth to edible weight.

I could not bring myself to eat it though I must have offended a couple of hosts. Theoretically I think being a good traveler, I should eat what the hosts nicely offer to me. But I just couldn't.

Hey, this is way off topic. What's that have anything to do with acronyms. It's all Chile's fault.

ruchi said...

So Chile I spent my lunch researching flax seed, and the only issue I see is that it's ALA omega-3 and not DHA. The stuff I've read says that you can only convert about 5% of ALA to DHA. Which I guess isn't so bad, but it sounds like you just need to eat a lot more flax seed to get the amount of DHA you need. But I'm sure you've done much more research on this, so I'd defer to anything you've learnt. Anyone else want to weigh in?

Cindy, why didn't you eat some? You could have been our rodentia-consuming guinea pig! (Tee hee)

Oh that is good! I kept coming up with zilch when I tried to do acronyms in my head.

Wahoo! How cool. And, after looking at the site, we are all definitely affluent.

I put together a little banner. Hmm, I'm too lame to get it to show up here. Arduous, I'll email it to you and see what you think.

ruchi said...

Shannon, I know, I am excited about APLS! Green Bean has one smart husband.

GB, I love the banner. Do you want to unveil it or should I?

Green Bean said...

Arduous, I just realized that I can do it. I invested all those hours trying to figure out how to post @*#()%#@ code for my Be a Bookworm banner. I might as well put it to good use. ;-) I'll get it up tomorrow.

arduous, as a church musician I get to know what the pastor's sermon topics are a few weeks in advance. When I heard he was going to preach about our need to serve the poor I refered him to the Global Rich List site you put me onto. He used it in the sermon this Sunday, and also linked it to the church's website. Thanks again for posting about that!
