The California Supreme Court has overturned the gay marriage ban, and my beautiful, wonderful, awesomest state is on the verge of becoming the 2nd state in the nation to allow gay marriage.
I cried when I read the news. And then I almost did a happy dance in my cube, but my co-workers already think I'm crazy. So I'm just doing a happy dance in my head.

That is amazing! Maybe NY will be next. Makes me sad that there even has to be a fight for basic human rights.
A happy dance
With thanks to Orgie for reminding me of the dancing banana a few back.
At times like this, I'm really proud to be a Californian. When they talk about spraying us to combat the LBAM, well, let's just leave it that I couldn't be happier the gay marriage ban is lifted.
Green Bean, I know how you feel. I am just so proud to be a Californian right now.
Orgie, yes New York had better be next!!
Beany, ha ha thank you so much for the dancing banana. This is a good morning. I just emailed a friend of mine and told him to get married RIGHT NOW!
great news
Yay! I just came in for lunch and read about it. It shames me so much that there was ever such a ban in the first place.
Now I expect some interesting discussions around town. I just the other day heard that, during a discussion with a friend of mine, a neighbor started spewing anti-gay hate (religiously based, in his case, though I know plenty of religious folk who are not anti-gay, so I know that's not a broadscale view by any means).
On the other hand, I know lots of closeted (or at least subtle) gay folks in the same teeny tiny rural area.
I'm not usually a bumpersticker type, but maybe just to annoy that hating neighbor, I'll have to get myself one of those "Straight But Not Narrow" stickers...
That's wonderful news! California is such a wonderful state... Now, would someone please take a cattle prod to lawmakers in the midwest? Talk about asleep at the wheel here, zzzzz! :o)
Jennie, isn't it? One more plus for the west coast, eh? ;)
Sue, I've never seen one of those bumper stickers, but that's pretty cool!
EBM, I know. I am WAY WAY biased but I think California is the best state in the union. :) Though I will admit that I do miss the midwest a lot at times.
Awesome!
Beany -- the best thing about that dancing banana is -- it didn't have to travel thousands of miles to get to California, like the other bananas do!
PS -- links to cool bumperstickers, buttons, etc, including "straight but not narrow":

Thanks for the link, Sue!
If I wasn't already longing to move home to California, this would do it. I'm with you -- CA is the best state by far. You don't happen to know anyone with a guest house a new baby on the way, do you? Someone who might need a really awesome nanny who is sick to death of Georgia? Sigh.
I thought bananas grew in California? Am I wrong?
One of the reasons I am _really_ looking forward to moving to CA is because I am hoping to get local bananas, avocados and mangoes. Some please tell me that this is available.
I was so happy when I heard it on NPR!
Annie, I personally don't know anyone who needs a nanny, but there are always people looking for nannies! Move back home! :)
Beany, I think I have seen banana trees in California, but I don't know that I've ever seen the fruits of said trees anywhere. Do some research on that will ya? I have 15 days left of local food and I miss bananas and mangos! (P.S. local food challenge? Not my biggest success. More on that later.)
Awesome! Hope it sticks this time!
I think it will, CAE. I think it will. Of course if it doesn't, and McCain becomes president, there's always moving to Vancouver! ;)
Oh, I cried too! And then I ran around announcing the news to all my coworkers.
And then one totally burst my bubble (he's a lawyer and gay, and so has every right to be cynical about this actually sticking...but, but...MEAN). If this goes to the Federal Supreme Court (and opponents of gay marriage have pledged to take it there), considering the current makeup of the Supreme Court, they are likely to rule that States may make whatever sorts of laws regarding marriage that they want, that it is not a federal issue. Unlike in Vermont, the law in question in California is a law OUTLAWING gay marriage..which would then still stand. Sigh.
Juliana, the US Supreme Court has no jurisdiction over this matter so I'm not sure exactly what issue your lawyer friend was talking about.
Opponents of gay marriage have promised to put a proposition on the ballot that would amend the California Constitution to make marriage in California between a man and a woman. Right now voters are split about 50/50 on the issue, which I think bodes well for us. Once we have married gay couples in the state, and the apocalypse doesn't happen, I think the numbers supporting gay marriage will increase. Plus, our republican governor doesn't even support the constitutional amendment.
What happened was that the California Supreme Court said that Prop 22 which was passed in 2000 was unconstitutional. Prop 22 was a ballot measure that made same-sex marriage illegal. The California Supreme Court said that Prop 22 went against the CALIFORNIA constitution, not the federal constitution.
That's why this can't go to the US Supreme Court. It's a state issue, not a federal one.
Congrats! I'm especially happy to hear that after all the Sally Kern BS - - ooh, that just drove me insane to hear. And may folks live happily ever after. Everybody has a right to their fairy tale.
Shannon, agreed. Everyone has their right to the fairy tale. :)
it's hilarious that the united states goes around to other countries, preaching justice and democracy. yet their own citizens have yet to see that... f**king hypocrites.
i can't wait for the day when the u.s. catches up with the rest of the developed world.
