Right now voters are split about 50/50 on the issue, which I think bodes well for us. Once we have married gay couples in the state, and the apocalypse doesn't happen, I think the numbers supporting gay marriage will increase. Plus, our republican governor doesn't even support the constitutional amendment.

What happened was that the California Supreme Court said that Prop 22 which was passed in 2000 was unconstitutional. Prop 22 was a ballot measure that made same-sex marriage illegal. The California Supreme Court said that Prop 22 went against the CALIFORNIA constitution, not the federal constitution.

That's why this can't go to the US Supreme Court. It's a state issue, not a federal one.ruchihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17043512641324366469noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9203077889905915553.post-16181503219611677202008-05-16T12:05:00.000-07:002008-05-16T12:05:00.000-07:00Oh, I cried too! And then I ran around announcing the news to all my coworkers.

And then one totally burst my bubble (he's a lawyer and gay, and so has every right to be cynical about this actually sticking...but, but...MEAN). If this goes to the Federal Supreme Court (and opponents of gay marriage have pledged to take it there), considering the current makeup of the Supreme Court, they are likely to rule that States may make whatever sorts of laws regarding marriage that they want, that it is not a federal issue. Unlike in Vermont, the law in question in California is a law OUTLAWING gay marriage..which would then still stand. It shames me so much that there was ever such a ban in the first place.

Now I expect some interesting discussions around town. I just the other day heard that, during a discussion with a friend of mine, a neighbor started spewing anti-gay hate (religiously based, in his case, though I know plenty of religious folk who are not anti-gay, so I know that's not a broadscale view by any means).

On the other hand, I know lots of closeted (or at least subtle) gay folks in the same teeny tiny rural area.

I'm not usually a bumpersticker type, but maybe just to annoy that hating neighbor, I'll have to get myself one of those "Straight But Not Narrow" stickers...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9203077889905915553.post-81452011854259722892008-05-15T12:31:00.000-07:002008-05-15T12:31:00.000-07:00great newsgreat newsJenniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07986787458979351622noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9203077889905915553.post-35018312868601553412008-05-15T11:54:00.000-07:002008-05-15T11:54:00.000-07:00Green Bean, I know how you feel.
