Hmmmmm. How about learning to do preserves since the really good produce season is upon us? Pickling, jamming, canning fruit & salsas. Each weekend you could turn your home into a science lab. Hopefully you could enjoy the results all year round. Or give yourself a nasty little case of botulism. What's life without a little risk?
Hmmm, Michael Pollan had an article in the NYTimes today urging people to plant a garden (um, not that I think I'll do it. I kill plants. Okay, I guess that's why it's called a "challenge.")
But I do like reading about food challenges =)
And I've just been catching up with your blog posts, Arduous. I love the one you wrote some weeks ago about feeling blessed. Beautiful. And some of your other optimistic ones of late. You sound like you're in a good place these days!
I agree... food, gardening, canning it's all good. Perfect time of year to plant something and see what happens! Check out square foot gardening for ideas that will make it easier on the suburbanites and city folks.
Hitting your farmers' market? I remember you debated that a few months ago in conjunction with reading Animal Vegetable Miracle. I think you live in an apartment so growing food (other than some sprouts or a pot of something on the balcony - if you have a balcony) may not be that feasible. You could try to eat all local produce for the month. It takes a bit longer to find sources of local animal protein and other products.
Alternatively, you could try to live without plastic for the month?
Whatever it is, I'm sure it will be a wonderfully entertaining journey for us all. Though, between you and me, this public transit month has been my favorite.
I will vote with Green Bean on living without plastic for a month. It is so so hard that I can only take on being 2/3 plastic free for now. But I'd be interested in seeing your experience.

You've been teasing me with the local food challenge every month, then choosing something else. I'm with organicneedle. Do local food + canning!

Aren't you joining Crunchy Chicken's eco throwdown challenge?

Wow, these are all great ideas. I will definitely take them under consideration. I'll let you know soon ... ack! I have to figure this out in 8 days!!
meditate for 5 minutes every day without giggling.
Oooh, Beany that's a good one!
Convert someone else to public transit by the end of the month ;)

Can you buy nothing at all? I will if you will.
