Off the Wagon

So once upon a time, I learned about how soda was bad for you and the environment for a multitude of reasons. There was the high fructose corn syrup, there was the manufacturing of the soda, there are lots and lots of reasons.

So I quit soda. Mind you, at the time, I was working in an office where there was abundant soda located in a fridge next to my desk. But I quit fairly successfully, only occasionally resorting to a Jones soda. Mmmm Jones.

Then I came to school.

I now drink soda every day.

It's funny how bad habits are hard to break, and easy to fall back into.

As my exams approach, I feel like I am breaking down, physically and mentally. My brain is over-taxed. I have tendinitis in my wrist. My room looks like it's been hit by an 8.0 earthquake.

And somehow, the only way I've managed to cope is through copious amounts of chocolate and caffeine administered at regular intervals.

I know there's got to be a healthier and better way. But is there a healthier way that also involves no time preparation?

What do you do when you're jammed to the wall, stressed, and literally cannot take 20 minutes out of your day without feeling guilty? How do you cope?

hmm, sounds like you need a visit from hgg to take you out to drink something stronger than sodas.

Will enter the UK tomorrow. When are your exams over, i.e. when can I visit?

Umm... a nice cup of tea from a renewable teapot - just keep adding hot water?

Thats what we always did - especially on days before an essay was due :)

I seriously don't get that thing that people have with soda!! What the hell is good about it?
However, I do have a serious wheat addiction.

You just HAVE to take those 20 minutes: You have to make a real plan for a day, let's say, and studdy time should SERIOUSLY be combined with rest-time. It would probably be smart to do something sporty in the fresh air at those pauses...

It's often hard for me to find motivation to work, bacause I also have an internet addiction. Sometimes I take the cord (or what ever it is) off and lock it into this safe-cabinet we have in the office. The trouble is, that I sometimes need the internet for my work, too.

But today I have been good and done quite a lot of work.

Just keep it up and it will be over at some point. Good luck!

sweet tarts, red bull, coke and coffee. Thats how i dealt...it was the only way...oh yea, and that's in addition to finding my zen 20 min a day...which i belive involved television and my cat.
You'll make it, don't worry...

I guess this is why we wound up with pop & convenience food in the first place. Because almost everyone winds up in a place where they really need it. So, is the answer to slow life down for everyone so that we've all got the time to "do it right", or to improve the contents of our vending machines?

The one awesome thing about exams, is that once they're over...they're over! Good luck!

Easy...I just had a mental breakdown. And became a slobery, blubbering mess.

Feeling the same...

My husband has been my savior these past two weeks.

HGG, oh my GOD we are so getting drinks. Many, many drinks. How long are you in the UK for? My exams are from June 10-June 22, but I'm going to need a day off at some point so we could meet up later this month too. Let's chat via email.

Viv, yes, I drink tea too. I love tea. Except when I run out of milk....

Kai, I have an internet addiction as well. Witness my blog post and response when I supposedly don't have 20 minutes to relax at all.

Kel, oh I miss sweet tarts. I don't think they have them here.

Wendy, actually I have to say, improving the contents of vending machines would be awesome, wouldn't it? For times like exam periods wouldn't it be great if you could get granola bars and bags of nuts and such in your vending machines instead of candy?

Beany, yes, mental breakdown may well be imminent.

Abbie, my sympathies, but we'll get through this thing!!

Um, when I was working a highly stressful job, 10-12 hours per day, I coped by developing a coffee addiction: grande vanilla soy latte on the way too and from work. Every day. I figured the first hour of my earnings each day just went straight to Starbucks.

I have no good suggestions. I don't deal well with high-pressure situations. (In college, my breakfast of choice was diet coke and a Snickers bar...)

Just keep repeating the mantra "This will be over soon. This will be over soon."

I second the suggestion to get some fresh air - even if you only walk to the nearest store to pick up some milk and a healthy snack!

Good luck!

You could try eating something that contains protein instead of drinking those high carb/high coffein drinks. An egg, some cheese, bacon/ham, chicken may help when you feel bored around your mouth. And you won't have a sugarspike like with soda...
